Ok, for Entry #1, we will go back a few years to when I was in a 'serious relationship' with Dun. We were on a date downtown. We parked at a FREE meter near a Cuban restaurant, (if you know Dun, you know that he loves free things). After eating, we were going to walk a few blocks to Minute Maid Park for the Astros game.
We ordered, I asked for a chicken dish with veggies on the side (green beans). I asked the waiter if there was any dairy (e.g. cheese, milk, or butter) in the meal and he assured me that there was not. I was really hungry by the time the food came out. I started eating away, and midway through the green beans, my lip started to swell. I like to call it “cheap Botox,” I begin to look like a supermodel who has had one to many shots of the toxin. The side effects suck!
My reaction to dairy products varies depending on the product I consume. This outlines my reaction with butter:( The green beans were soaked in it. Most of my dairy encounters occur when I am so hungry that I don’t wait after the first few bites for a reaction. I just trusted that the waiter knew what he was talking about when he said no dairy. I used to think that this kind of thing happens as a result of the language barrier between us, his native language being Spanish, but I have concluded through my years of experience with this that it is much more than that. Even when explained in the native language, this concept is not understood by some cultures. The concept of “no dairy” is foreign to many people.
We were the only people in the restaurant, but still the service was sluggish. We called the waiter over and he took the plate away. I don’t think he offered to compensate us for the meal that was now lost and making me very sick. This was a relatively new relationship, and I don’t like making scene when this occurs, so we went on to the Astros game. I love attending sporting events and I really liked this guy, so I wanted to stick it out. We walked a few blocks to Minute Maid Park, and I felt trouble brewing in my belly! I needed medicine and fast! On a positive note, my lips looked voluptuous and kissable for my date.
Those few blocks seemed like miles to the storm brewing in my stomach. We got to the baseball park, and found the first aid room. I didn’t consume enough butter for the swelling to go beyond my lip, so I didn’t need to add benadryl to the mix. They gave me a shot of Pepto…gotta love the liquid pink stuff! It is my friend for sure! I can’t swallow the pills very easily and I think more of the chewable tablet gets stuck in your teeth than makes it to your stomach. The liquid works fast…but in this case, not fast enough! Too much time had gone by (probably 20 min), so I rushed to the nearest restroom just in time. What you never want to happen to you on a date, happened, at least it was a public bathroom;) So much cannot be said for a date I had with a guy years later, but I’ll save that for another blog. So out of the phrase: “the good, the bad and the ugly”…this is the ugly part for sure.
Dun and I went on to date for a while, we shared the same sense of humor which is what made this story in my non-dairy dating life humorous.
